With hunting season underway, now is a good time to think about how you might keep firearms in your household from being accidentally tampered with by a loved one, putting them and others at risk.
According to Dr. Emily Rae, a psychiatrist at Gundersen Health System, guns are the leading cause of death for children younger than 19 in the United States. Most of those deaths are from intentional homicide, with suicide not far behind. A small – though no less significant – portion includes accidental deaths, and that’s why health care providers stress the importance of keeping guns locked or locked up.
