RIO RANCHO, N.M. —The holidays can often be a time of celebration, but for others, it can be a time of grief.
For years, gun violence has devastated families throughout New Mexico. Like Melissa Hernandez, who lost her nephew on Dec. 31, 2021.
“He has a present under my tree. My ornaments, that I just couldn’t bring myself to put up, were all blue to honor him,” she said.

“Unfortunately, there was unsecured weapons in the residence,” Hernandez said. “The person that’s accused of murdering him had access to that unsecured weapon.
